Finding the perfect fire for your limestone fireplace

Limestone fireplaces suit a wide range of fire styles, from gas fires and electric fires to more traditional stove designs. Limestone’s bold white and off-white colours look stunning in both simple, angular designs and more ornate, carved facades – the right open fire or stove can either perfectly complement the surround or provide a unique contrast.

Caring for a limestone fireplace

Limestone is sturdy and built to last, but the relative softness of the sedimentary rock does mean it requires care and attention to keep it at its best. Any marks are best cleaned with a clean cloth lightly dampened with water and a small amount of washing up liquid – dedicated cleaners and all-surface sprays can react with the surface to cause even worse damage, while the absorbent nature of limestone means too much water should be avoided too.

Alternatives to limestone

Limestone’s closest equivalent is marble – the materials are very similar, and you’ll be able to find many styles that are available in both. While limestone is more soft and natural, marble brings a striking formality to more ornate designs. Take a look at our full range of marble fireplaces.
