The journey began with James Smith, born in Edinburgh in 1816, who embarked on a foot journey to America, apprenticing as a metalworker in New York. Successful ventures led him to think about bringing his stove-making expertise back to Britain. In the late 1800s, he introduced his stoves and cookers to the Victorian market in Edinburgh. Partnering with Stephen Wellstood and George Ure, the ESSE brand emerged, reflecting the French trend of the time.
ESSE – Warming Homes and Hearts
ESSE stoves gained prominence, with endorsements from historical figures like Florence Nightingale and explorers like Shackleton, Scott, and Hinkes. In 1985, the Ashby family acquired Smith & Wellstood, marking the beginning of ESSE’s residence in Barnoldswick. The company, now under the directorship of Robert and Peter Ashby, has continued to innovate, introducing a diverse range of products, including solid fuel, oil, gas, and electric stoves.
Innovative Designs and Sustainable Practices
ESSE’s Ironheart cooking stove, launched in 2004, melds modern European influences with the design principles dating back to 1854. The product range expanded with additions like ESSE 1000, Warmheart, Bakeheart, and ESSE 175. In 2023, ESSE took a significant step towards sustainability, installing twelve hundred solar panels, aligning with government mandates for energy efficiency and decarbonization targets.

ESSE’s commitment to quality is evident in its Clean Air certified stoves and boilers. HETAS recognizes ESSE stoves on its Cleaner Choice certification scheme, acknowledging a 50% improvement on Clean Air requirements for particulates at both high and low output. The company proudly received the Made In Britain certification in 2015, affirming its British roots.
